Botox is a neurotoxin that affects the nerves and muscles that it is injected into. It has become widely popular for cosmetic procedures and facial rejuvenation. Injections of a small amount of Botox into specific muscles smooth wrinkles and fine lines. It can also be used to treat uncontrolled muscle movements and certain migraines.

What is Botox used for?

Botox injections are recognized for their ability to reduce the look of fine lines and facial wrinkles. They can also be used to treat cervical dystonia (neck spasms), hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), overactive bladder, and lazy eye. They are also used to prevent certain types of migraine headaches.

Botox injections are made from a toxin called onobotulinumtoxinA which temporarily prevents muscles from moving. This toxin is a byproduct of the botulism microbe, a type of food poisoning. Botox is the first drug to use this toxin.

Where does it work best?

Botox limits the ability of nerves to cause muscles to contract. Since the muscle that has been injected cannot contract it makes wrinkles soften and relax. Botox is most effective on forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. It will not work on wrinkles that have been caused by gravity or sun damage.

Botox can be used anywhere on the face, but some areas respond better than others. Forehead wrinkles are most often treated with very good results. This is an area that shows aging quickly. Forehead wrinkles are very difficult to hide since they are in a prominent part of the face. Botox can limit the muscle movement that causes these wrinkles and, in some cases, lasts up to 6 months, but your results may vary.

Crow’s feet, those small, fine lines that reach out from the corners of the eyes are easily treated with Botox. The lines become softer looking and give you a more youthful appearance.

Marionette lines reach out from the corners of the mouth, downward toward the jaw. Botox can lessen to look of these lines.

Frown lines form between the eyebrows. They are called this because they become more prominent when you frown. These lines can make a person look angry, tired, or upset. Botox can reduce the depth of these lines.

Smoker’s lines are also called perioral lines. You don’t need to be a smoker to get these. They form when you purse your lips and Botox can lessen the ability to do that, reducing the appearance and future deepening of the lines.

Neck bands appear when platysma muscles start to sag. Botox injections cause these muscles to relax and lessen the appearance of the bands. Neck fat does not respond to Botox.

Botox does wonders for sagging brows. Relaxing the muscles that pull eyebrows down allows them to hold a more youthful shape. It can be considered an instant brow lift without the surgery.

Do the Botox injections hurt?

Botox injections are done with very tiny needles. This causes very little discomfort. Often ice packs are used to numb the area that is being treated which reduces the discomfort that can be associated with the injections. Other techniques can be used for people who are exceptionally nervous around needles. Each person is different.

What results am I expecting from Botox?

Botox injections are not instantaneous, they take time to work. But you can start to see results fairly quickly after the procedure, sometimes as soon as 3 days. You should be able to see the full results of the injections in about 14 days. If this is your first time getting Botox, you may need to wait longer to see results.

The look of shallow wrinkles and fine lines will lessen very soon. Bigger, or deeper lines and wrinkles will require more time to fade. In about 14 days the areas that have been treated will look fuller, smoother, and more youthful. You can also find out about our facial rejuvenation services.
