What are the dos and don’ts of microneedling?

There are some things that you will want to keep in mind when you choose to do microneedling. After the treatment, take care of your skin simply and easily. Your skin will be sensitive to cleansers and other parts of daily life. Use gentle cleansers and moisturizers. Use gentle sunscreen. You can apply a hyaluronic serum to boost hydration and possibly use a soothing serum.

Be patient with the results. You may not see immediate results. Depending on what you are trying to achieve, you may need several procedures to get the results you want. Microneedling results will improve over time. Don’t use retinol and avoid harsh acids for a week or two after your treatment. Talk with your specialist about what will work best after your treatment.

Initially, you may want treatments frequently, but it is best not to have them too close together. You may want the first series about a month apart for three months. After that, once every 6 months will offer a good maintenance schedule.  Microneedling is not for everyone. It works best when treating textual concerns, like enlarged pores, acne scars, and crepey skin. It doesn’t work as well in treating active acne.

What do I need to know before microneedling?

Microneedling is an easy but delicate procedure. You will want to ensure that you have someone you trust for this. Take your time to find a qualified specialist who will take the time to go through the procedure with you so that you will feel comfortable.

You must discuss past cosmetic treatments and skin conditions that you have. The specialist needs to have a complete understanding of your specific needs to be able to give you the best treatment possible. A qualified specialist will be able to evaluate your skin type and check for anything that can cause problems with the procedure.

This time with the specialist can also give you the information you need to be properly prepared for the procedure. They will inform you what precautions to take, what skincare products to avoid, avoid tanning before, and avoid products with retinol, or forms of vitamin A.

How do you get the best results with microneedling?

The most important thing that you can do to maximize your results is to minimize your sun exposure and tanning before and after your treatment. Use good sunscreen and keep your skin moisturized to keep it healthy.

Here are a few other things you can do to make your procedure more effective:

• Exfoliate a few days before the treatment, but not the night before. Do this several times per week in the weeks before your microneedling procedure.
• Microneedling leaves your skin more sensitive to the sun and UV rays. Apply sunscreen frequently after your treatment.
• Keep your skin nourished and well-hydrated. Your skin will be better able to take in the hydration and nutrients right after the procedure, so they will be more effective and produce better results.
Wash your hands before you touch your face to reduce the risk of infections.
Your skin will need time to heal. Avoid activities that will make sweat or open your pores. Avoid swimming pools, workouts, and saunas for at least 72 hours to protect your skin.

How long does it take to fully heal from microneedling?

The good news is that it normally takes just 24 hours to heal from a microneedling procedure. In some cases, it can take up to 3 days and this will depend on the treatment you have had. You can go about your normal activities after leaving the office but should refrain from wearing makeup for at least 24 hours. Follow-up treatments should be done 4 to 6 weeks later.
